THE MAN BEHIND THE SITE
In every incarnation of DoubleParker since 2000, even going back to the original website in 1997, the About Me section has always been the most difficult to fill out. That the site is, on its surface, essentially a shameless self-promotional plug is an irony that is not lost on me, so you'd be forgiven for believing I'd be eager to slap in as much neon exposition to what might be dismissed as a digital one-man Vegas show complete with a vectorized Brad that bounces up and down across the Austin skyline from the front page. It does have that, not just because I like animation, but also because bouncing Brads are fun!
DoubleParker is meant to be all those things, to be sure, but to disregard it as a solo-act variety-hour from a man that simply appears to play a lot of instruments and has an overabundance of free time would be selling it short, and would be missing the point entirely. DoubleParker isn't just a showcase for what I've done and what I enjoy doing, but it's also a reflection of who I am at my core, flaws and all. That isn't meant to be a lame, cop-out excuse for any mediocrity the site might have (I am not a programmer, after all), but to emphasize many of the qualities this site possesses that I, too, share - for good or for bad. It's rabid inconsistencies and refusal to be boxed into any one category isn't so different from my own eccentricities. What could easily be dismissed as a surface hobby might hold so much more beneath the surface once its scratched, unveiling an obsessive attention to detail and over-the-top meticulousness capable of eliciting a "why the hell would anybody spend so much time on that??" ...Or maybe not! Maybe a feature or entire section of the site that initially presented itself as larger-than-life, brimming with boundless potential, might turn out to be nothing more than an elaborate ruse masquerading as visual profundity, or even a missed opportunity, if not utterly base (Well...Hopefully not THAT bad).
Another important characteristic that this site strongly reflects: I am not defined by my job, although I do love what I do. Despite what it might seem, DoubleParker is NOT a professional portfolio - so much so, in fact, that nowhere on this site will you find a single client-based gig or any paid assignment - It just simply doesn't exist here. Would a professional portfolio showcase an animated GIF of a potential employee dancing on a subway?
AMIRITE?! LOOKIT!
PROBABLY NOT.
I also like to think that I constantly strive to improve my own character, spending countless hours and energy attempting to round out rougher corners here and there as they crop up. I've easily poured thousands of hours into DoubleParker over the last couple of decades, reshaping it as the times have changed, carrying over features that might still be relevant and entertaining, retooling them to reflect the newer web technologies, or simply dropping others like a bad habit. Have I hammered in the physical/digital growth-process analogy enough yet?
Building and maintaining a non-profit site like DoubleParker isn't exactly a lucrative business decision. Putting the time, effort and energy into something that generates zero income and is a total time-vampire might be considered somewhat of a gamble even from the most optimistic of angles, but the experience along the journey has been rewarding in so many other ways. I'm proud of what I've achieved in my life, and in my career. DoubleParker represents the recreational side of my talents and experiences, and it exists because of a stubborn, steadfast resolve to follow through on a pretty ambitious goal. It also helps to have the creative abilities to produce so many different types of content, paired with a strong, innate curiosity to try new things, explore new areas of tech and dive into real world experiences whenever and however I can.
From here, the site and the brand will only continue to grow. DoubleParker is continuously expanding outward on both ends - More content is being added, and older content is being dusted off, preserved, shined-up to its original luster and re-implemented in the archives section.
Like me, I hope that DoubleParker continues to evolve and improve, day by day, every day!
